Day 34: If There is a Will, There is a Way!

March 13, 2006

Although staying busy being lazy is a nice occupation once in a while, we were more than happy to get back on the road on Monday morning. Captain Berto should have arrived, and we will finally get to Roatan!

We met Michelle & Gianluca back at the port of La Ceiba, and then we saw the boat… ARE OUR CARS GOING ON THIS BOAT??? First of all, it looked physically impossible - the boat was just way too small! Well, our Nissan maybe somehow… but Michelle's van!!?? Either we are absolute skeptics, or the captain of the boat is the biggest optimist we have ever met :) The captain, a pleasant and relaxed fellow, calmly responded: "Don't worry, we'll put them both on..." - "But by what means?! You don't even have a ramp for driving a car onto the boat!" - "I don't know, but we'll figure that out…" (In other words, "get lost kids, I've been sailing all night long and at the moment couldn't care less about your little cars")

Guess the ultimate decisive factor was the news that this boat has just transferred 4 rental cars for ALAMO to Roatan. Well, whatever is meant to happen, let it happen! We'll give it a try :) When everything seems to be set, a new problem emerges: Captain Berto is a cargo boat and cannot take any passengers onboard. All the boats are inspected before departure and would face a big fine if there were any people onboard other than the crew. The only way out is for us to leave the cars at the port and transfer ourselves to Roatan on Galaxy II. Leaving both vans unattended until midnight (Captain Berto's departure time), and giving the car keys to the people we have never met before is the least we want to do… Michelle is even more insistent - she refuses to leave the van under any circumstances. However, the last Galaxy II is departing in an hour; an we have to come to some decision NOW. A feverish discussion results in an impromptu plan: Dovi and Zee will take the passenger boat to Roatan and wait for Captain Berto in Coxen Hole (the port town of Roatan) tomorrow, to make sure the cars are carefully unloaded, while Michelle and Gianluca will stay at the port of La Ceiba and watch the cars being put on the boat. Those guys would come to Roatan on the first Galaxy II tomorrow. This way, the cars would not be left unattended at any moment, except when in transit.

No time for second thoughts. We give the car keys to the captain and wave good-bye to our friends. The situation couldn't be more pathetic: no receipts, no invoices, no insurance… all we know is the captains name and his phone number, and all we have is his promise that the cars will be in Roatan tomorrow at around 6AM :). Well, if you want people to trust you, you have to start from trust the others… This way, half an hour later, we are on Galaxy II, on the 2-hour ride to Roatan.

Some rides on Galaxy II may be more boring than the others, while we got lucky to catch a truly exciting one! :) The voyage started from a jolly bouncing over the waves and enjoying the water splashing as high as the top of the boat. All the passengers seemed excited and very happy. Half an hour later, the atmosphere on the boat slightly changed. The ice-cream boy seemed to be having a really hard time finding more customers, while the crew member with a huge stack of sickness bags was running back and forth non-stop :) Again, probably not all the rides on Galaxy II are that bad, but if you think you are prone to seasickness, have that little pill ready :)

The unforgettable ride on Galaxy II was very reassuring indeed: we could already picture our Nissan bouncing through the waves - up and down, up and down, and down, and down, and down..… :) Needless to say, we were wide awake and present at the port of Coxen Hole way before 6AM. It's been a long time since we've waited for something so much as we were waiting for Captain Berto that morning :))

Stay tuned to find out if our Nissan and Michelle's Ford made it to Roatan. In the meantime, the first one who guesses the correct ending of the story, will get a postcard from Costa Rica (or wherever we are at that time)!! Please post your versions on the message board! :)

34-oji diena: Viltis skesta paskutine

2006 m. kovo 13

Pagaliau!

Na gerai, reikia prisipazinti, jog apie krovininius laivus nei vienas nenusimanome tiek, kad galetumem kritikuoti Kapitono Berto sugebejimus. Taciau dvi "smulkmeneles" vis tik neduoda ramybes. Pirma, bet kas, turintis dvi tiesiai matancias ir objektu dydziu neiskreipiancias akis, apziurejes si laiva is karto pasakys, kad dvieju masinu, is kuriu viena Michelles Fordo dydzio, vienu metu ant denio sutalpinti fiziskai neimanoma, nebent krautum jas viena ant kitos. Antra, tarkim musu visu penkiu (na gerai, 4 - Loki siuo klausimu liko be nuomones) realybes suvokimas yra visiskai sutrikes, ir dvi masinos ant denio puikiai sutilps… kokiu tuomet budu jos bus I laiva ikeltos? Nepastebejom nieko net is tolo panasaus I rampa, kokiomis masinos uzvaziuoja I laiva… :) Laikas ieskoti kapitono - tegu paaiskina, kokia burtu lazdele jis mosuos, kad Nissanas su Fordu atsidurtu laive.

Laivo kapitonas, visa nakti plaukes is Roatano I La Ceiba, mieliau snuduriuotu netrukdomas sauluteje, negu atsakinetu I musu "kvailus" klausimus. "Ko jus taip jaudinates? Ne pirmas kartas gi… Praejusia savaite sutalpinom ir perkelem 4 masinas ALAMO masinu nuomos firmai. Viskas bus gerai, plaukiojom - zinom". Po tokio issamaus atsakymo mums mintyse sukyla vaizdai is filmo "Greitis" - vienas is jureiviu seda uz Nissano vairo, gerai isibegeja…

Kas nerizikuoja, tas plaukia I Roatana be masinos.

Kitaip kapitonui kliutu didele bauda. Jokie prasymai ir pazadai gerai pasislepti nepadeda - kapitono "ne" grieztas ir nenugincijamas. Net gi jei musu nerastu inspektorius, gali pamatyti kitu laivu darbuotojai, kurie tikrai paskustu, visiems laikams suzlugdydami Kapitono Berto reputacija.

Ka darysi, reputacija - dalykas, be abejones, neikainojamas - ta suprantam.

Tokiu budu, masinos nei minutei neliks be prieziuros (isskyrus laive, bet cia jau nieko negalime pakeisti).

Situacija tokia keista, kad nebegalime patys is saves nesijuokti - ar dar kada nors is viso pamatysime savo masina? Ka darysim, jeigu Kapitonas Berto rytoj paprasciausiai nepasirodys? Kam skusimes ir, svarbiausia, ka sakysim, jeigu neturim jokio dokumento, isskyrus kazkoki ivaziavimo I uosto teritorija popieriuksti ir kapitono garbes zodi? :)) Salin, pragaistingosios mintys!

Kazkuria is praejusiu dienu zadejome parasyti daugiau apie kelione Galaxy II. Taigi, kelione is La Ceibos I Roatano uosta Coxen Hole trunka apie 2 valandas. Ta diena, kada kelemes mes, modernus dviaukstis keltas prisipilde pilnutelis.

Jei norite suzinoti istorijos pabaiga, teks palaukti ateinacios dienos reportazo :) O kol laukiate, pameginkite atspeti, kiek is dvieju masinu - musu Nissano ir Michelles Fordo -laimingai atplauke I Roatana. Pirmajam teisingai atspejusiam - prizas: atvirute su linkejimais is Costa Ricos! :)
